The year 2024 started off to a great start for Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII).
It’s the Year of Yes and we promised you that we would get members out of their comfort zones with 10 challenges for 10 years of GWII. Just to name a few, we kicked off with February being movement month. The challenges set up for the month focused on steps, cardio, mobility and strength. March was mental health month, with April being career wellness month. The month of May focused specifically on intentionally loving yourself, with June focusing on environmental sustainability. July, August, September and October followed in the respective themes.
GWII hosted the first Mix n Mingle for 2024 – Padel & Pose, featuring a dynamic blend of padel, yoga, invigorating breathing exercises, and light fitness to kickstart the ladies' day with a bang! It was fun, energising and all about movement!
On the topic of decrypting cyber: translating cyber-babble and navigating the digital frontier, GWII then hosted a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) session. During the session, esteemed panellists consisting of two cyber underwriters and a digital forensic investigator delved into the world of cyber insurance, unpacking the sector’s development and exploring the current trends and claims witnessed in the market.
With an empowering theme: 'Vote for YOU this 2024', GWII kicked off its first networking event of 2024. The highlight of the evening was a captivating speech by Ferial Haffajee, an esteemed South African editor and journalist currently serving as Associate Editor at the Daily Maverick.
We then hosted a LeaderWalk themed ‘The Future of Leadership is Collegiality’ – where guest speaker Mike Teke, CEO of Seriti, spoke about what it takes to be an effective leader in today’s business world.
This was followed by a CPD session on the topic of “Environmentally Exposed – The Impacts to The Environment Following a Spill”, where Adelle Hartley, General Manager of Envirosure gave an overview of Environmental legislation, Nema Section 30 reporting requirements including fines and penalties for contravening the National Environmental Management Act. She also delved into claims scenarios highlighting the various methodologies utilised and the impacts on the environment.
A little bit of flavour
We then hosted our Mix N Mingle – Golf Masterclass - at the World of Golf aimed at non-golfers, to teach women the rules and fundamentals of the game and provide practical experience on the golf course.
In celebration of Women’s Day, GWII, in collaboration with the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG), hosted a Women’s Day event themed “Our Game, Our Rules” which incorporated the Olympic games and proudly South African elements. It was all about celebrating women’s unique strengths and the power of women coming together.
GWII then rounded off the year with more CPD sessions and leaderwalk events, followed by the annual golf day and year-end function, on 13 November.
