GWII… what a year it has been!

The year 2023 started off to a great start for Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII).

Just to name a few, GWII hosted the first Mix n Mingle for 2023 - Healthy YOU - with a focus on self-care, overall health and well-being, dedicated to promoting healthy habits and providing practical tips to help members start the year on the right foot.

We then hosted a Leaderwalk on 8 March, themed ‘Navigating Office Politics’. Niven Postma, a strategy, leadership and culture consultant, took attendees through the five myths of office politics and guided them on how to navigate office politics effectively, ethically, and successfully.

This was followed by a CPD session on the topic of assets/property exposure assessment and Maximum Probable Loss (MPL), where André Pienaar, Director and Principal Underwriter at F&I Re (Pty) Limited took us through the purpose of MPL, survey reports - factors affecting MPL, calculating MPL, applying MPL to treaty capacity and more.

We then hosted our first networking event of the year, themed It’s the year of twenty-twenty-SHE on Thursday 23 March. Kirsten Landman, an inspirational female keynote speaker spoke about the year of twenty-twenty-SHE.

A little bit of flavour

To spice things up, since this year’s year-end theme was Bollywood inspired, Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII) thought it would be good to get some practice, by inviting the ladies to a Bollywood themed dance workshop and more. On 13 April, GWII hosted a Bollywood Night Mix n Mingle. With their Bollywood inspired outfits, the ladies were in for unforgettable fun, where music and dance took centre stage.

On the topic of how AI and automation can help improve the claims experience, GWII hosted a CPD session on 17 May, where guest speaker, Antonia Oakes, Old Mutual Insure’s Executive for Customer Experience and Responsible Business spoke about how AI-enabled customer experience is the most effective route for institutions to deliver personalised, proactive experiences that drive customer engagement.

GWII hosted the second Leaderwalk on 8 June. In this LeaderWalk themed Transformational Leadership, Vivien Hunt, a Leadership and Executive Coach unpacked what shifts leadership from transactional to transformational and explored two fundamental building blocks that unlock transformation, namely trust and courage.

GWII’s second motivational event, themed train your brain took place on Wednesday 21 June, where guest speaker Doné van Wyk, an inspirational female keynote speaker spoke about mindfulness for peak performance and brain training techniques for success.

On 6 July, GWII hosted a Golf Masterclass, with the last Mx n Mingle (Bowls Day) hosted for the year on 16 November.

In celebration of Women’s Day, GWII, in collaboration with the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG), hosted a Women’s Day event themed ‘Together, Let’s Rise Up and Take Up Our Space! Phakama Ndlovukazi – Rise Up Queen’, celebrating the true essence of womanhood and empowering women to take on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

GWII then rounded off the year with more CPD sessions on 14 September and 10 October and Leaderwalks on 19 September and 7 November, followed by the annual golf day at the magnificent Steyn City Golf Club in Midrand on 26 October and the Bollywood year-end function, on 23 November.
