GWII CPD Session: Hidden in Plain Sight: Waste Pickers’ Environmental Contributions

The June Challenge for Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII) is Environmental Sustainability, as the Year of Yes continues.

With this, GWII hosted a thought-provoking webinar Hidden in Plain Sight: Waste Pickers’ Environmental Contributions on Tuesday, 4 June, proudly sponsored by Charter Risk Underwriting Managers.

In her presentation "Hidden in Plain Sight: Waste Pickers’ Environmental Contributions," Professor Melanie Samson, Associate Professor of Sociology, Department of Sociology, Faculty of Humanities of the University of Johannesburg highlighted the significant role that waste pickers (reclaimers) play in environmental conservation and economic support within urban settings. Despite their crucial contributions, reclaimers often remain overlooked.
