Diamond in the rough… Women’s Day event

In celebration of Women’s Day, Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII), in collaboration with the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG), hosted a Women’s Day event, on 4 August, themed ‘Diamond in the Rough’ with main sponsor Discovery, co-sponsors Emerald Risk Transfer, Hollard and Sasria, and partner sponsors Camargue Underwriting Managers, Credit Guarantee Insurance, F&I Insurance , F&I Reinsurance, Genasys Technologies (Pty) Ltd , Innovation Group South Africa , King Price Insurance, Old Mutual Insure and Tracker South Africa.

The event, held at Randpark Golf Club, boasted the perfect ambience for a Women’s Day celebration. With beautiful décor, flowers and colors… it was fun, it was bright, and it was chic.

On arrival, the ladies each received a goody bag sponsored by Chubb, Credit Guarantee Insurance, iToo, GWII and Lombard, then headed off to the bar for some welcome drinks, with a touch of Emerald green, sponsored by Emerald, and a little bit of networking.

Off to their tables and seats, to indulge in a starter, the event started off with a welcome by IIG Deputy President Simphiwe Mtyali, followed by GWII President, Catherine Naidoo, who reminded us about what we were celebrating and the significance of women’s month.

Soon after, the first speaker was introduced.

Some life lessons

Ayanda Thabethe, an award-winning TV Host/MC and Co-Founder of Quick Face Beauty, shared seven lessons she has learned over the course of her journey and career.

“The first lesson is that dreaming is free. I knew I was born to thrive... I knew the kind of woman I wanted to be. You have to speak and dream it for it to become a reality. So, speak life into your dream, revisit it or challenge it. The second is to receive bullies/negativity as pointers to your greatness. Block negativity off before it comes to light. No dog barks at a stationary vehicle, so you are doing something right if people are jealous. Find your greatness and don't let others define it. Thirdly, keep the passion alive. Sacrifice for it and make the time for what you really want to do,” she said.

“Fourthly, no experience is ever wasted. Where you are right now is where you're supposed to be. My fifth lesson is that you need to trust the magic of new beginnings. Don't be scared to leave your comfort zone. My sixth lesson is to always prepare for the future. Utilise what you have to make sure your future is secure. And lastly, don't shy away from being a multifaceted woman. Try new things and be adaptable,” she concluded.

In sharing some of her personal life lessons and career journey, Michelle Maharaj (Mrs SA Top 5 Finalist 2021, Philanthropist and Entrepreneur) said, “Through my journey up the corporate ladder to success... I've learned that you live and you learn. When it's time to shine, you shine. When you fail, it just means you need redirection. There's either a blessing or a lesson.”

“My winning formula in life is to be authentic, humble and teachable,” she concluded.

During the evening three lucky ladies walked away with Quick Face hampers.

A charitable cause

As customary, members were asked to bring along R100 for the nominated charity, Cornerstone Woman for abused women and children.

We would like to thank each one of you for your donations.

During the event, Samantha Le Roux, Founder of Cornerstone Woman shared her personal experience of domestic abuse. “Our starting premise is that every woman deserves to feel safe and secure in her home, in her body and with her future. But we cannot help abused women do it without your support, as well as the many companies that we look to as a source of support and therefore, hope. Donations of any size, and support of any nature, make a big difference to our cause because they help us to continue our work.”

“When the mothers of the world are in trouble the world is in trouble,” she concluded.
